Bapangku Bapunkku

 

Novel berjudul Bapangku Bapunkku ini mengisahkan peran besar seorang Ayah dalam mendidik anak-anaknya. Bapang adalah panggilan untuk ayah dalam bahasa Suku Semende, Sumatera Selatan. Bapang merupakan ayah dari empat orang anak. Orangnya nyentrik dan teguh pendirian. Atau bisa dibilang keras kepala. Dia menolak panggilan selain Bapang. Bahkan untuk seorang ayah yang agamais, Bapang menolak dipanggil Abi.

Bapang memiliki empat orang anak. Anak sulungnya duduk di bangku SMP. Selebihnya masih SD. Walaupun anak-anaknya masih kecil, Bapang tidak pernah main-main dengan pendidikan dan pembentukan karakter mereka. Semuanya mempunyai pekerjaan tetap sebelum berangkat sekolah. Rutinitas itu dijalankan setiap habis shalat subuh.

Dalam menghukum anak-anaknya yang berbuat salah Bapang juga tidak sembarangan. Dia memilih memberi hukuman yang unik, yaitu menyalin Al-Quran satu juz dengan tulis tangan. Hukuman yang diwarisi Bapang dari ayahnya. Sebuah hukuman yang cerdas, yang membuat anak-anaknya mahir menuliskan Bahasa Arab dengan indah.

Bapang juga menyukai aliran punk. Aliran yang menjunjung tinggi azas kebebasan. Di rumahnya Bapang menerapkan kebebasan berpikir, berekspresi, berkarya dan mengeluarkan pendapat. Dia membebaskan anak-anaknya menyelami minat mereka masing-masing. Ekstrimnya, Bapang tidak mempermasalahkan jika anak-anaknya hanya fokus pada pelajaran yang mereka sukai saja. Dan nilainya anjlok di pelajaran yang lain.

ASas punk yang disukainya tak hanya diterapkan pada anak-anaknya. Namun, juga untuk menentang ayahnya. Ayah Bapang yang kaya raya menginginkannya menjadi pegawai negeri yang setiap bulan menerima gaji dan di masa pensiun masih dapat tunjangan. Namun Bapang menolak. Bapang memilih membuka usaha rumah makan, membuka taman bacaan dan mendirikan sekolah.

Namun tidak selamanya kebebasan berpikir ala Bapang bisa diterima. Terutama oleh Bunda, istrinya. Hanya karena tidak terima Anjam, anak bungsunya, dikatakan bodoh oleh pihak sekolah, maka Bapang pun berniat membakar seragam anak-anaknya dan mengeluarkan mereka dari sekolah tersebut. Tindakan ini serta-merta ditentang oleh Bunda. Keluarga yang semula rukun terancam berantakan. Bapang tetap dengan pendiriannya. Surat cerai nyaris dilayangkan.

Bapang pernah keluar dari anggota pengurus masjid karena tidak setuju dengan renovasi masjid yang dinilainya menghambur-hamburkan uang. Bapak pernah ribut dengan kepala sekolah karena memang dia tidak menyukai sistem pendidikan formal. Di mata Bapang sistem pendidikan dan kurikulum pendidikan formal kerap hanya membebani para siswa tanpa manfaat yang jelas untuk kehidupan. Beberapa pelajaran yang sulit dianggapnya hanya menjadikan anak sebagai mesin penghapal. Tidak punya pengaruh yang jelas untuk masa depan.

Novel entitled Bapangku Bapunkku revealing father’s main role in educating the children. Bapang was the name attributed to call father in Semende tribe language, existed in South Sumatera. Bapang was a father with four children. He was an eccentric man and unequivocal. On the other words, he was a stubborn personal. He refused to be called others names but Bapang. In fact, for a religious father, he refused to be called Abi.

Bapang had four children. His first child was in junior high school. The rest of them were still in elementary school. Although his children were just a little kid, Bapang never disregarded their education and character building. Everyone had their own duty before leaving for school. It was done every time after Shubuh prayer.

Once the children made mistakes, Bapang was carefully in grounding them. He chose unique way to ground them by copying one Juz of Quran in hand writing. It was tradition inherited by Bapang’s father. A clever grounding method for the children became more skillful to write Arabic neatly.

Bapang was keen of punk genre. The genre prioritized freedom above everything. At home, Bapang applied freedom of thinking, expressing, creating, and arguing. He let his children to explore their own interests. In extreme way, Bapang did not mind if his children focused only on their favorite subject. And their grades on other subjects were down.

Bapang’s fondness toward punk was not only applied to children but also to stand against his father. Bapang’s father was wealthy desiring Bapang became a government employee with monthly payment and retirement fee at the end of the duty. On the contrary, Bapang refused it. He chose to open a restaurant, reading gallery, and establish a school.

But in reality, Bapang’s freedom thinking was not always acceptable especially his wife, Bunda. Once, Bapang was so angry because his last child, Anjam was demoted by the school. Bapang was about to burn his children uniforms’ down and get them out of school. Bunda disapproved what Bapang intended to do. The good family was one step closer to the edge and about to break. Bapang persisted to his will. Divorce document was almost on the table.

Bapang had ever walked out from mosque management since he objected on mosque renovation which he considered as extravagant attitude. He argued with school principal for he disagreed the formal education system. In his opinion, formal education system and curriculum had only been a burden for the students without distinguished advantages in real life. Some difficult school subjects were only considered to set the students to be memorizing machines. No meaningful credits for the future.
