Liburan sekolah Zen diajak ayahnya liburan ke Jambi—tempat pamannya, Om Huda mengajar. Begitu sampai di Jambi, Zen langsung semangat. Apalagi di sana terlihat sangat asri, masih banyak pohon-pohon tumbuh tinggi menjulang. Sangat berbeda dengan keadaan di Jakarta.  Dan semangat Zen semakin tinggi ketika melihat hampara hutan yang luas.  Dia sangat ingin bertualang. Sayangnya keinginannya itu dilarang oleh Ayah dan Pamannya.

Di sana Zen berkenalan dengan penduduk setempat. Ada Ahmad yang baik hati dan Ruli yang terlihat dingin. Suatu hari tanpa sengaja mereka bertemu dengan perempuan-perempuan rimba. Ternyata perempuan-perempuan Suku Anak Dalam itu, sedang mencari bahan makanan. Ahmad yang baik hati, memberikan talas kepada mereka. Melihat hal itu Zen semakin takjub. Dia tidak percaya bahwa dirinya sedang melihat sebuah kehidupan dari sisa sebuah peradaban masa silam.

Keesokan harinya, Zen kembali bertemu Suku Anak Dalam.  Namun anehnya anak rimba itu langsung lari ketika mendengar bunyi bersin dari rumah Ruli. Dari keterangan Ahmad, dia baru tahu kalau anak rimba sangat takut terhadap penyakit influenza, karena konon katanya penyakit itu sangat berbahaya dan bisa mematikan. Zen jadi semakin penasaran tentang Suku Anak Dalam. Namun, dia sadar kalau dia tidak boleh ke sana, itulah pesan Ayah dan pamannya.  Jadi dia tidak boleh melanggarnya.

Namun tanpa diduga, saat Zen, Ahmad dan Ruli kembali dari pasar, mereka tersesat di hutan. Ketakutan pun menyergap ketiga anak itu.  Belum lagi, ketika mereka bertemu anak-anak rimba, anak itu langsung pergi ketik Zen mengatakan dia berasal dari Jakarta.  Apa yang akan terjadi pada Zen dan teman-temannya? Dan pesan rahasia apa yang Zen terima dari anak Rimba?

Novel ini  mengenalkan anak tentang kehidupan di hutan rimba, yang sangat memilukan, setelah adanya penebangan hutan secara liar dan kebakaran hutan. Di mana orang-orang rimba, menjadi kesulitan dalam mencari bahan makanan. Padahal hutan adalah tempat hidup mereka sejak dahulu kala. Di sini anak diingatkaan untuk selalu peduli kepada kelestarian alam. Selain itu dalam kisah ini, penulis mengajarkan anak untuk selalu bertanggung jawab, selalu bersyukur, dan berkata jujur.

Zen was spending holiday with his father taking him to Jambi – the place where his uncle, Uncle Huda taught. As he arrived there, Zen got excited. Everything looked natural, there were a lot of sky high trees. It was so much different compared to Jakarta. Zen got fired up when he saw a wide large sea. He wanted to have an adventure so bad. But his father and uncle forbade him.

Zen met some local residents there. There were the good hearted Ahmad and the cold Ruli. Once upon a day, they met jungle women by coincidence. It turned out that these women were the Tribe People looking for food materials. The good hearted Ahmad gave them taro potatoes. Zen was amazed by them. He could not believe that he had seen an ancient civilization from hundred years ago.

At the other day, Zen met the Tribe People again. But surprisingly, they just ran away at the time they heard Ruli sneezed inside the house. From Ahmad explanation, Zen found out that the Tribe People were really terrified of influenza since they believed it was dangerous and deadly disease. Zen was getting curious for them. On the other side, he realized that he could not go there because his father and uncle said so. He must not break it.

Unfortunately, once in time Zen, Ahmad, and Ruli got lost in the middle of jungle on their way home from the market. Fear caught them up. Moreover, the Tribe People they met on their way was running away at the time they knew Zen was from Jakarta. What was going to happen next to Zen and his friends? And what hidden message Zen got from the Tribe People?

This novel revealed the miserable life of the Tribe People after the illegal logging and forest fires. That consequently the Tribe People were hard to find the food materials. It hindered the fact that the jungle used to be the place for their living. The implied message for us was to always care for natural preservation. In addition, the writer wished to teach the children to always be responsible, grateful, and honest.
